Golf is a wonderful combination of sports, nature, relaxation and networking. Considered one of the most exclusive sports in the world, golf has started to gain an increasing popularity in Eastern Europe.
Bulgaria golf courses
Bulgaria has been the first one to open some of the best golf courses in South Eastern Europe, at great rates, which attract thousands of tourist each year. Even Bulgaria’s neighbours did not believe at the beginning that Bulgaria can really be an impressive golf destination.
Bulgaria is still perceived as a suitable place for summer holidays at sea, because it has a 350 km coast extending from the southern Turkish border to the Romanian north border. However, this country has much more to offer than its golden beaches. Bulgaria is a colourful mosaic of rich historical and cultural traditions, culinary delights, recreational and natural beauty.
If you are a passionate golf player, probably you arealways looking for new challenging terrains all over the world. This is why our travel experts have visited and tested three golf courses next to each other, on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, which are known as the Cape Kaliakra Golf destination.
There is no doubt that these are some of the most spectacular lands on which you can play golf in Europe. Although they are in close vicinity to each other, the land is different and it offers different challenges. Each golf course has its own personality and uniqueness waiting to be discovered.
BlackSeaRama Golf & Villas Resort
Overlooking the beautiful Cape Kaliakra bay, BlackSeaRama offers someunforgettable views and a great golfing atmosphere. This was the first golf course designed by Gary Player in Bulgaria-18 holes, par 72, with atotal length of 6,648 meters. After playing the first game on this field in 2009, right after the big opening, Angel Cabrera, the great US Masters champion, said that the pitch “offers the best of Gary Player’s style.”
BlackSeaRama is a classic “golf link” golf course. The residential area consists of one or two-storey villas and 5-star hotel services. The complex also includes tennis courts, a spa, fitness area, football field, and several swimming pools. BlackSeaRama produces under its own brand wine from the vineyards that grow along the terrain.
In 2009, the BlackSeaRama Golf Course was named “The Newest New Golf Course in the World” by Golf Inc Magazine and the following year, BlackSeaRama was named the Newest Golf Resort in the World by US Golf Magazine. After you visit it, you will totally agree with their assessment.
Its natural appearance and warm landscapes, BlackSeaRama gives a sense of calm and balance. After a long day on the field, there is nothing more relaxing than enjoying the view and a glass of good locally produced wine.
Thracian Cliffs Golf & Beach was the diamond of Gary Player’s portfolio in 2011. Each of the 18 holes offers to the golfers an incredible view over the Black Sea, in all its grandeur. The magnificent landscape, the blue sky and the rich vegetation represent a trademark of this superb golf course.
This 18-hole land has a length of 6,853 meters, it is a par 72, stretching over 4.5 kilometers along the coast. The 6th hole begins with a blow from the top of a rock to its green which is 40 meters below. Another challenge is the seventh hole, whose tee box is actually on a small island in the sea.
Thracian Cliffs is the only golf resort in Bulgaria that offers its own beaches. Guests can also relax in the stylish Spa and enjoy high-class therapies and natural Bulgarian products such as yoghurt, honey, mud and wine. This terrain will definitely challenge your golf game and the spectacular views will give you the energy to keep going.
This resort is the third field of this Bulgarian golf trio, and the first golf course signed by Ian Woosnam in Bulgaria. It is a prestigious “links” terrain, a successful combination of traditional design and lush landscapes that has recently entered the European Tour.
The Lighthouse Hotel overlooks the sea and is very close to the Club, the Golf Academy and to the road leading to the beach. Golfers and all guests can also enjoy other sports and leisure facilities, including two tennis courts and a football pitch. Spa facilities include a Finnish sauna, a Turkish bath and a hot tub all offering a well-deserved relaxation after a five-hour game.
With its many spa and fitness facilities, the Lighthouse Resort is a suitable option for golfers traveling with non-golfers, as it offers something to do for everyone.
So, given the fact the Bulgaria’s wonderful coastline enjoys more than 260 sunny days a year and is just three hours drive from Bucharest, Romaniait is hard to find a reason not to visit these three Bulgarian golf resorts.
Romania golf courses
Golf in Romania has been brought by the growing expat community who loved this beautiful sport. At this moment, in Romania there are two courts with 18 cups and the rest have between 6 and 9 cups. In addition, there are two training courses and two simulators, both in Bucharest.
If Bulgaria’s best golf courses are on the Black Sea Coast, in Romania, you will find them in the heart of Transylvania, the most famous and one of the most beautiful regions of Romania.
On the shores of Mures river, Theodora Golf Club is a surprise for golf lovers, stretching over 62 hectares. The unique 5ha lake with the island and 2 greenhouses where golfers have the opportunity to practice their craftsmanship complement this customised golf course.
Golf Club Paul Tomita. The beginnings of the Pianu de Jos golf course are related to the desire, passion and influence of professor Paul Tomita to set up a golf club in Romania.
Professor Paul Tomita was a living legend for Romanian golf, representing Romania at the World Golf Championships for years, being named “the most remarkable personality of the 1968 World Cup” by Golf Illustrated magazine. He traveled in over 23 countries, following his passion for golf, playing with personalities such as Alfred Dunhill, HRH King Michael of Romania or the Kennedy family.
Although he obtained 70 ha of land in concession, in the first phase only half of the land was used to arrange the first 9 cups. In the late 90s, it was the only golf course in the Romania at the time.
In 2005, the land was increased to accommodate all 70 ha, becoming the first golf course in Romania with 18 cups, par 72. The entire area was fenced, all the roads were redesigned, the green ones were restored and irrigated, and 15 water ponds were built to irrigate the land.
There is a golf club building which, besides the specific functions, also houses an indoor training ground as well as technical spaces, garage and indoor parking.
Surrounded by majestic old oaks and an impressive panorama, the Golf Hotel Pianu is dedicated to golf lovers and tourists seeking tranquility and relaxation.
The hotel has 27 double rooms and an apartment, along with a restaurant with a terrace, a conference room and an exterior swimming pool with a terrace.
